Discovery Elementary School

Arlington County, Virginia

The project involves the construction of a new elementary school on the existing Williamsburg Middle school campus and new synthetic turf soccer fields, multi-purpose field, and baseball diamond. The existing Middle School was maintained. The site is located on one (1) parcel (approximately 24.99 acres in total size) and is connected with N. Harrison Street. The entire area (25 acres) is owned and maintained by Arlington County Public Schools (APS). Bowman Consulting provided civil engineering, surveying, scanning, and construction administration services to support the project. Significant aspects of the project include the development and submission of a Special Use Permit Site Plan; completion of schematic, design development, and construction documents; and construction administration services.

The project involves significant coordination with various stakeholders, including civic associations and internal County Departments. In support of these efforts, Bowman Consulting, performed a detail scan of the existing middle school and created a full BIM REVIT model which will be used for presentation purposes and ultimately design of the new elementary school.

In addition, the location of the site falls within the Pimmit Run sub-watershed which has documented stormwater issues and as a result the new school will include significant water quality and quantity facilities such as rain gardens, bio-swales, rain gardens, and other low-impact-design techniques. It is desired to allow for these facilities to be visible and instructional in nature.

The project included extensive new synthetic turf soccer fields with infrastructure included for future lighting. A new baseball field and basketball court were also included.
