Patuxent River Naval Air Station Hangar 111

Lexington Park, MD

Hanger 111 is a pre-World War II aircraft hangar on the National Register. The Navy plans to renovate Hanger 111 to extend its service for another 50 years.

For this project, Bowman Consulting established a GPS control network based on NAD 83 and NAVD 88, verified to Patuxent River Base control. Then using 3D laser scan technology and the mobile TopoLift, Bowman scanning specialists safely and accurately performed a detailed topographic and existing conditions survey on the tarmac area around Hanger 111 and Hanger 110. The 3D scan captured accurate x, y & z data on the hanger buildings, mechanical, electrical and HVAC systems and the existing tarmac surface surrounding the hangers. The Bowman deliverable included 2D topographic and existing conditions survey depicting 0.5-foot contour intervals. The 3D Point Cloud data will be utilized in a future phase of the project for preparing a Building Information Model (BIM) in Revit format on Hanger 111. Additional site survey work included a complete topographic survey and utility as-built on a separate parking area which serves Hanger 111 and Hanger 110. The total area surveyed for this project was approximately 28-acres.
