The project site was an old industrial area on the Hudson River waterfront. Many heavy industrial uses were present. The site was criss-crossed by railroad tracks that ran from several ferry landings to points west. This site was classified as a brownfields site and required extensive cleanup and capping of contaminants, as well as provisions for safe installations of underground utilities and structures. Also, being on the waterfront, with comĀ¬pressible silt and clay soils there was huge potential for settlement of new buildings, so deep soil compaction along with pile foundations were required extensively. Lastly, being on a major tidal water body, the provisions to protect against flooding were required. The project involves the construction of a mixed use community conĀ¬taining 4000 multi-family housing units, retail space, parking decks, hotel, a new ferry terminal, a new light rail station, and a 2 mile waterfront walkway.
